Desk lamps — they’re more important than you think. Everyone has one, but do you have the best desk lamp for you work environment? Desk lamps have made a few leaps and bounds along with many other electronics in the last five years. You have now lamps that enable you to customize your lighting and brightness to the time of day or even your mood. Plus those lamp models with Qi charging pads built right in are sure nice!

Benefits of Owning a ‘Smart’ Desk Lamp

Alright, so this may seem fairly obvious. You own a desk lamp so you can see when you’re working at your desk. You’ll want to consider just what kind of effect you’re going for with your lamp, however.

If you have a large computer at your desk that provides enough light on its own (which it may not! consider the eye strain) then perhaps your desk lamp is more for decorative purposes. You also may be using it to benefit from a little mood lighting. You may not rely on it entirely as your light source, but it does help brighten up the room when you flip that switch.

Or, you could be using your lamp as a task light, doing some old-fashioned writing or reading. And when you get a desk lamp, you can also put a smart light bulb in it.

What To Look for When Shopping for Desk Lamps

What to look for all comes down to what task you’re looking to do. We’ll show you the light when it comes to selecting one. You want a lamp that’s easy on the eyes. And also one that’s literally easy on the eyes — some lighting is better for your eyesight than others, so you’re also going to want to make sure you’ve got the best desk lamp for your eyes as well.

Creating an Atmosphere

You may not be an interior designer, but you know that good lighting makes a room look good. Coordinate your lamp’s light with other floor lamps or overhead lights in the room. Create the mood you’re going for by layering different kinds of light, be it natural or colored, from other lamps you have in the room. You can have a white light, or a more muted tone if you want a softer look in your room. Also, consider the strain you’re putting on your eyes when looking at your phone and computer screen all day. LED lamps are usually the best desk lamps for eyes, and help to reduce the strain when needing light.

Matching the Decor

Of course, you’re going to want a lamp that fits in just right with the theme you’ve already got going on in your home. If your room is more modern, you might want to go for more of a sleek and compact look to fit with the existing decorations. You can opt for a classic, Victorian style theme that ties into the room. It’s important to get just the right fit for your desk as well. Perhaps you need a taller lamp to fit over your computer if you’re strained for space. Or a shorter, stockier choice if you have the room.

We’ve been fortunate enough to give this next desk lamp a hands on review, and see how it does in a true working environment. Being someone who spends a lot of time in front of the computer (sometimes well into the night) I looked forward to testing out a solution to lighting that would take up virtually no room on my desk. Smart Home was supplied the product in exchange for a review. This is only a service we provide for reputable brands. You can read more about our policies on our About Page.

What’s In The Box

The product consists if 3 pieces. The control dial and wire, the mounting piece, and the ScreenBar itself. Getting the lamp out was simple and assembling was a breeze.

What We Love

-The Mounting Piece

The mounting unit is comprised of a counterweight, meaning it simply has to be set on the top of your monitor and the weight does all of the work for you. No tightening or adjusting is necessary besides simply moving it around to the desired position. This also means that removing it is just as easy. It has a low profile and doesn’t even block the webcam on my Mac Monitor- yet it’s strong enough I don’t worry about it falling.

benq dial

-The Dial

There is an edition of this lamp without an adjustable dial. I strongly suggest splurging and making sure it is included. The dial controls dimming, and light hue- taking the setting from warm to cool.

-Auto Adjust

The Auto Adjust feature is especially handy. Simply click it and the sensor on the dial adjusts the warmth and brightness accordingly.

What We Like

-Warm Light or Cool Light

As you can see from the photos above, there is quite a large difference between the warm and cool light setting. I work much better in warm light, as cool light tends to strain my eyes better. It’s an amazing difference!

-Virtually No Footprint. The dial is smaller than my mouse.

I use a lot of notebooks when I work. Combined with my coffee and water bottle that doesn’t leave a lot of room for other items. Having a desk lamp with virtually no footprint is a great feature.

-USB powered.

-Angle of light doesn’t get on my screen

What We Wish Was Different

-There’s not a whole lot to complain about. It works as advertised.

-We would love to see a battery powered option for on the go (wireless) and perhaps a smaller version for laptops.
